Blue Heron Park Pedestrian Bridge, City of Lake Forest Park
CivilTech provided structural engineering services to design the substructure to support a 60-foot long prefabricated pedestrian bridge spanning McAleer Creek. Design of the substructure required close coordination with the manufacturer to make the proper connections between the superstructure and substructure. One challenging aspect of this project was the poor substrate, which would require either extensive over-excavation or a deep foundation system. Our engineers selected a deep foundation to minimize impacts to the adjacent roadway. Helical piers were utilized in lieu of conventional augercast, cast-in-place, or driven piles since loading requirements on the bridge were small and cost savings could be achieved by using helical piers.
